Note: Market cap = Price × Circulating Supply. FDV (Fully Diluted Valuation) uses total supply instead. These calculations use circulating supply by default.
Understanding Market Cap
Market Capitalization (Market Cap) represents the total value of a cryptocurrency. It's calculated by multiplying the current price by the circulating supply.
The Formula
To find what price a token needs to reach a target market cap:
Market Cap vs. FDV
- Market Cap: Uses circulating supply—tokens currently available in the market
- FDV (Fully Diluted Valuation): Uses total supply—includes locked, vesting, and unreleased tokens
FDV is often much higher than market cap for tokens with significant locked supply. When comparing tokens, use the same metric for both.
Why Market Cap Comparisons Matter
Comparing market caps helps set realistic price expectations. For example, a token priced at $0.001 might seem "cheap," but if it has trillions of tokens in supply, it might already have a massive market cap.
Comparing Two Cryptocurrencies
Use the "Compare Market Cap With" feature to answer questions like "What would Ethereum be worth if it had Bitcoin's market cap?" This helps you:
- Understand relative valuations between similar projects
- Set realistic price targets based on comparable assets
- Evaluate whether a token is over- or undervalued compared to competitors
Limitations
- Market cap doesn't account for liquidity—large orders can move prices significantly
- Supply can change through minting, burning, or unlocks
- Market cap is a snapshot—it fluctuates constantly with price
- Comparing to gold or stocks has limitations due to different market dynamics
